Croatia booked their place in the FIFA World Cup knockout stage with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Ghana on Saturday, thanks to goals from Luka Sučić and Nikola Vlašić.
The result ensured Croatia advanced as runners-up in Group L behind England, while Ghana, who had already secured qualification before kickoff, finished third despite the defeat.
Croatia struck first in the 31st minute when Sučić unleashed a powerful long-range effort that flew into the net for his second international goal, giving his side a deserved lead.
The Europeans nearly extended their advantage before halftime. Vlašić rattled the post with one effort, while Marin Pongračić headed over from a Luka Modrić free-kick delivery.
Ghana responded strongly after the break and eventually found an equaliser in the 73rd minute through Derrick Luckassen. Following a brief VAR review, the goal was confirmed, sparking wild celebrations among the Ghanaian supporters inside the stadium.
The Black Stars pushed for more, but Croatia regained control in the closing stages. Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare produced a brilliant fingertip save to keep the scores level, only for Croatia to break through moments later.
With seven minutes remaining, Modrić delivered a pinpoint corner that Vlašić met with a decisive header to restore Croatia’s lead.
The midfielder celebrated by sprinting toward his teammates with his arms spread wide as Croatia edged closer to qualification.
Ghana had opportunities of their own, including a first-half chance for Antoine Semenyo, whose low strike drifted narrowly wide of the post.
The forward, who enjoyed an impressive club season, was unable to find the net during the group stage despite entering the tournament with high expectations.
While stars such as Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland have dominated headlines at the tournament, Semenyo’s wait for a World Cup goal continues.
However, with Ghana safely through to the knockout rounds, the striker will have another opportunity to make his mark on football’s biggest stage.
