World Cup: Bosnia crush Qatar 3-1, to keep knockout dream alive

Bosnia and Herzegovina boosted their hopes of reaching the knockout stage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with an impressive 3-1 victory over Qatar in a crucial Group B encounter in Seattle on Wednesday.

The Europeans took control of the match in the 29th minute when Kerim Alajbegovic unleashed a superb strike from outside the penalty area, sending the ball into the top corner to give Bosnia the lead.

Bosnia doubled their advantage just five minutes later after veteran striker Edin Dzeko’s delivery caused problems in the Qatar defence, with Mahmoud Abunada inadvertently turning the ball into his own net.

Qatar responded before the break as Hasan Al Haydos found the back of the net following a well-worked move involving Edmilson Junior, reducing the deficit and giving the Maroons hope heading into halftime.

Bosnia nearly restored their two-goal cushion shortly after, but Dzeko was denied by the woodwork as his effort crashed against the post.

The Asian side pushed hard for an equaliser after the restart, with Akram Afif leading several attacking moves, but Bosnia’s defence stood firm under sustained pressure.

The introduction of Ermin Mahmic proved decisive for the Dragons, as the substitute capitalised on a rebound in the 80th minute to score Bosnia’s third goal and put the result beyond doubt.

The victory moves Bosnia and Herzegovina onto four points and significantly strengthens their chances of advancing to the Round of 32, while Qatar’s hopes of progressing suffered a major setback.
