The Bayelsa State Police Command has confirmed that the young woman found dead in a hotel room in Igbogene, a suburb of Yenagoa Local Government Area, was a 22-year-old commercial sex worker, not a National Youth Service Corps member as initially rumored.
In an official statement released in Yenagoa, Police Public Relations Officer Musa Mohammed identified the deceased as Miss Francisca Otu, a native of Omubo community in Akwa Ibom State.
She was said to be residing in the area commonly referred to as ‘Ashawo Quarters’ in Okarki, a nearby town close to Bayelsa.
The tragic event took place last Saturday at a well-known guest house in Igbogene, where the victim had checked in with an unidentified man suspected to be an internet fraudster, popularly called a ‘Yahoo boy’.
“A receptionist at the guest house reported that the young woman was found naked and lifeless in one of the rooms,” Mohammed said. “The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) from Igbogene Division led a team to the scene and evacuated the body.”
Mohammed added that the police have commenced a forensic investigation to trace and arrest the fleeing suspect.
The command has appealed to members of the public to come forward with any useful information that could assist in the investigation.
