Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has publicly declared support for President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid, as the All Progressives Congress continues to attract defectors from opposition parties.
The endorsement coincides with Tinubu’s Lagos visit for official engagements and Sallah celebrations, marking his administration’s second anniversary on May 29.
Sanwo-Olu first signaled his backing during Lagos’ 2025 Workers’ Day commemoration at the packed Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, where over 10,000 NLC and TUC members gathered under the theme “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship.”
Addressing the historic crowd, the governor pledged sustained commitment to workers’ welfare, emphasizing Lagos’ status as Nigeria’s leading state for salary and pension remuneration despite global economic pressures.
“The President’s reforms are beginning to bear fruits, given the growth we have witnessed in the agricultural sector which has led to a reduction in food prices,” Sanwo-Olu stated, characterizing Tinubu as a “compassionate leader” invested in laborers’ wellbeing.
He urged patience with federal reforms, asserting that the Renewed Hope Agenda was delivering measurable improvements.
Through official channels including his X account, Sanwo-Olu expanded his praise for Tinubu’s midterm achievements: “Two years ago, Nigerians entrusted you with a mandate rooted in hope, vision, and the promise of renewal. Since then, you have embraced the demands of office with courage and determination, making difficult but necessary decisions in the interest of long-term national development.”
The governor’s statement highlighted Tinubu’s policy impacts: “Over the past two years, we have witnessed bold actions, foundational reforms, and a focused effort to deliver on the Renewed Hope Agenda. Leadership is never without challenges, but meaningful progress is being made.”
He positioned Lagos as a key partner in the federal agenda, adding: “As governor of Lagos State, I stand in full support of your vision and remain committed to working together for the good of all Nigerians.”
Sanwo-Olu’s endorsement carries strategic weight as the APC consolidates its base ahead of 2027. His dual messaging – addressing both workers’ immediate concerns and national development goals – reflects attempts to balance grassroots priorities with broader political objectives.
The governor’s remarks notably avoided mentioning the recent wave of opposition defections to the APC, instead focusing on policy outcomes and intergovernmental collaboration.
