Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has publicly reaffirmed his support for President Bola Tinubu, dispelling recent speculation about a rift between the two political allies.
The governor made his position clear through a post on his official X.com account on Tuesday, following his participation in seeing off the president after Eid-el-Kabir celebrations in Lagos.
“Today, I accompanied His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and saw him off as he departed Lagos following the Sallah break. I remain dedicated to supporting his efforts and policies, which aim to bring real and lasting change to the lives of Nigerians. I wish him safe travels and success in all his engagements. As always, Lagos stands ready to play its part in building the Nigeria we all hope for,” Sanwo-Olu wrote.
The governor’s statement comes after Chief Muraina Taiwo, a member of Lagos State’s Governance Advisory Council, addressed rumors of tension between the leaders.
Speaking on Sunday, Taiwo confirmed the matter had been resolved privately, stating: “Everything they are saying, God has resolved it. The father (Tinubu) has drawn his son (Sanwo-Olu) closer, and the son has also hugged his father; we are now one in Lagos State.”
Speculation about strained relations began when a viral video from May 31 showed President Tinubu appearing to snub Governor Sanwo-Olu during the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway inauguration. The governor’s subsequent absence at the Epe-Ijebu Ode deep seaport access road reconstruction in early June further fueled rumors of discord.
However, recent developments indicate reconciliation, including Sanwo-Olu’s visit to Tinubu’s Lagos residence during Eid-el-Kabir and his latest public declaration of support.
President Bola Tinubu concluded his Sallah holidays in Lagos and returned to Abuja on Tuesday.
The President had initially arrived in Lagos on May 27 to attend the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Economic Community of West African States.
A video shared by Mr. Dada Olusegun, Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, showed President Tinubu accompanied by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu as they departed for the airport.
The post was captioned: “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu heads back to Abuja from Lagos after the Eid Holidays in Lagos. He was accompanied to the airport by H.E Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the Executive Governor of Lagos.”
