W’Cup qualifiers: S’Eagles’ Nwabali may miss Rwanda, S’Africa clash

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali is a major doubt for Nigeria’s 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying fixtures against Rwanda and South Africa after sustaining an injury.

The Chippa United shot-stopper was stretchered off in the first half of his club’s South African Premier Soccer League encounter with Richards Bay on Tuesday night, raising concerns over his availability for the upcoming international games.

Nwabali, 29, who has been Nigeria’s number one since his impressive outing at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, was recently included in coach Eric Chelle’s 31-man provisional list for the September qualifiers.

With his fitness now uncertain, the Super Eagles may have to turn to one of Adebayo Adeleye, Amas Obasogie, or Ebenezer Harcourt, the other goalkeepers named in the squad.

Nigeria will open camp next week in Uyo ahead of their clash with Rwanda’s Amavubi at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium on Saturday, September 6, before traveling to Johannesburg to face Bafana Bafana four days later.
