W’Cup qualifiers: Chad stun Ghana with dramatic 1-1 draw

1 Min Read

Chad stunned Ghana with a late equaliser in the 89th minute to seal a 1-1 draw in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier.

The Black Stars appeared set to extend their lead at the top of Group I after Jordan Ayew struck from close range in the first half.

However, the hosts had the final say in N’Djamena when Celestin Ecua surged forward and unleashed a powerful left-footed effort from the edge of the box, which deflected past goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, sparking wild celebrations in the stands.

Ghana had opportunities to kill off the contest before the late drama, but Antoine Semenyo of Bournemouth and Tottenham midfielder Mohammed Kudus both squandered chances.

Despite the setback, the Black Stars maintain a four-point cushion at the summit of Group I as they chase qualification for a second consecutive World Cup.

That advantage, however, could narrow later on Thursday, with Madagascar, currently third, hosting the Central African Republic, while Comoros, sitting second, travel to Mali.

Only the winners of each group are guaranteed a ticket to the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
