Super Eagles skipper, William Troost-Ekong, has insisted that South Africa, not Nigeria, will shoulder the weight of expectation when both sides clash in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier on Tuesday.
The fixture, billed for the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein, kicks off at 5 pm Nigerian time, with Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana hosting the three-time African champions in what promises to be a fierce encounter.
Focus, Not Pressure
Troost-Ekong stressed that the Super Eagles are calm and focused on seizing their chance.
“We are just concentrating on the opportunity in front of us. I believe the pressure is more on South Africa. People have written us off before, but we’re still in the race to top the group. We are looking forward to tomorrow’s game,” he said at a pre-match press conference.
Fresh Confidence
Nigeria heads into the tie full of belief after edging Rwanda 1-0 in Uyo last weekend. The Saudi Arabia-based defender explained that the squad is fully prepared for another test.
“This is a new occasion, and we’re carrying a new level of confidence from our preparations. Today’s training is key, and tomorrow presents a fresh opportunity. We know what we’re capable of as a team,” he added.
Respecting Bafana Bafana
The Super Eagles and Bafana Bafana settled for a 1-1 draw when they last met in the qualifiers. Troost-Ekong expects another tense battle.
“It will be a tough game because Bafana are a very good side. At the last AFCON, they gave us one of our most difficult matches. We respect them, but we also believe in our strength,” he said.
United Front
The former Watford man also underlined the bond within the squad as a vital weapon.
“This team is built on unity, togetherness, and fighting spirit. Everyone is moving in the same direction, no matter your club or status. There’s real brotherhood here, plenty of talent, and one common goal—to win.”
