South Africa, reigning champions of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, produced a commanding 4-0 win over Mali in Oujda on Monday, undoubtedly their finest display of the tournament so far.
The emphatic victory secured top spot in Group C and set up a quarterfinal clash with Senegal.
Ghana, who comfortably dispatched Tanzania 4-1 in Berkane, finished second in the group.
Despite the heavy defeat to South Africa, Mali progressed as one of the two best third-placed teams—joining Senegal in advancing at the expense of Botswana.
With the quarterfinal lineup now complete, Mali are set to face hosts Morocco, Ghana will take on Algeria, while Nigeria prepare to battle Zambia.
South Africa’s intent was clear from the first whistle. Coach Desiree Ellis’ squad looked sharp and composed, showing they are more than ready for whatever lies ahead.
It took only five minutes for Banyana Banyana to break the deadlock. Lebohang Ramalepe opened the scoring in style, finishing high into the net after Jermaine Seoposenwe nutmegged Coulouba Sogoré with a precise through pass.
Seoposenwe remained central to South Africa’s attacking threat, drawing a foul on the edge of the box soon after. From the resulting free-kick, Refiloe Jane curled in a sensational effort, described by many as a “worldie”, which snuck into the near post off the glove of Mali’s substitute keeper, Fatoumata Karentao.
Despite a few second-half adjustments from Ellis, the intensity never dropped. Gabriela Salgado came close on a couple of occasions before Hildah Magaia extended the lead just past the hour mark.
Karabo Dhlamini provided the assist, sliding the ball through for Magaia to slot in with her left foot, again beating a substitute keeper, Alima Cissé.
The scoring was wrapped up in the 79th minute when Ronnel Donnelly marked her debut goal for Banyana Banyana.
She coolly finished a cut-back from fellow substitute Nonhlanhla Mthandi, sealing a night of dominance for the defending champions.
