Ghana’s Black Queens sealed a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout victory over South Africa’s Banyana Banyana in the third-place match of the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations on Friday.

The tightly contested clash ended 1-1 in regulation time after both sides battled fiercely for the consolation prize.

South Africa took the lead just before halftime when Nonhlanhla Mthandi capitalised on a costly goalkeeping error to slot home in the 45th minute.

But Ghana found their rhythm in the second half, and Kusi Alice drew the Black Queens level in the 67th minute with a brilliant header from a pinpoint cross.

With neither team able to find a winner in the closing stages, the match went to penalties.

Ghana held their nerve in the shootout, converting four of their kicks to claim the bronze medal.

Attention now shifts to Saturday’s final showdown, where Nigeria’s Super Falcons will face host nation Morocco.

The Falcons booked their place in the final with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over South Africa, while Morocco edged Ghana via penalties after a 1-1 draw in the semi-final.
