WAFCON: Ex-Kwara Utd coach hails Super Falcons over Tunisia win

Former Kwara United coach, Samson Unuanel, has commended the Super Falcons for their dominant display in the opening match of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where they cruised to a 3-0 victory over Tunisia.

The Nigerian side began their Group A campaign in emphatic fashion on Sunday, setting the tone early when star striker Asisat Oshoala nodded in a brilliant cross from Omorinsola Babajide in the fourth minute.

Babajide later turned scorer, doubling Nigeria’s lead just before the halftime whistle with a composed finish. Shortly after, Ashleigh Plumptre thought she had added a third, but her effort was ruled out for a foul in the build-up.

However, substitute Chiwendu Ihezuo put the result beyond doubt with a late goal, six minutes from time.

Speaking to Completesports, Unuanel applauded the team’s approach and performance, while stressing the importance of maintaining focus for the remaining group fixtures.

“I am really delighted that the Super Falcons started their WAFCON campaign on a winning note because the three points are always important in your first game.

“The determination and hunger from the way they played shows that the players are in Morocco for business. But then, this is just the first hurdle for them, which they have successfully achieved.

“Now they must focus on their next game and ensure they pick up the maximum points to sit pretty comfortably on the group.”
