A former student of Yaba College of Technology has raised concerns after being barred from entering the institution’s Epe campus for over a week due to his Afro hairstyle.
In a viral video on Tuesday, the young man expressed frustration as security officers prevented him from accessing the campus, claiming his natural hair violated school rules.
“How will you tell me not to come into the campus with my hairstyle? See students coming into the school with rough hair. See students coming in with rough hair, and you are telling me I can’t come in because of my inappropriate hair,” he said.
He argued that the restriction was unfair, especially since he had urgent business worth over N2 million inside the campus.
“You have trained me to know my rights. You’re telling me I need a hairstyle permit to enter the campus. Why am I not allowed to enter when I have a tangible reason to? I have been stopped for over a week now,” he lamented.
The video also captured a security officer threatening him, saying: “Are we the one that stopped you from entering? The management said we should not allow you to enter the campus. Just go. If you don’t, you will be dealt with. I will wound you now.”
The former student pointed out that other students with bushy hair and dreadlocks were allowed in, questioning why he was singled out. He described the situation as embarrassing and discriminatory.
When contacted, YabaTech’s Public Relations Officer, Adams Adekunle, said he was unaware of the incident but promised to investigate. As of press time, the school had not issued an official statement.
