VIDEO: We’re from Kwara, Plumptre’s alleged mom, family reveal

The background of the emotional white woman captured in a viral video crying after Nigeria’s thrilling 3-2 comeback victory over host nation Morocco in the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final has now been revealed.

In a heartwarming video shared by @Superfalconshow, the woman’s husband, yet to be officially named, disclosed that they are Nigerians hailing from Kwara State.

While the Super Falcons’ sensational victory, which sealed a record-extending 10th continental title, dominated headlines, fans were equally moved by footage of the tearful woman in the stands.

The viral clip, originally captured by Making of Champions and widely circulated on social media, sparked speculation that the woman was the mother of Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre.

The emotional reaction led many to hail the woman as a symbol of passionate support for Plumptre, who was born in England but plays internationally for Nigeria.

However, in an interview posted by @Superfalconshow, the man seen in the video alongside the woman and their children proudly introduced his family as passionate Nigerian supporters of the Super Falcons.

“We enjoyed every bit of the game. The second half was incredible,” one of the daughters said.

Another added, “We feel like the champions the Super Falcons are.”

Expressing his excitement, the father stated, “We are excited all the way from Kwara State. We are excited to be champions. These are my children.”

To further clarify the viral moment, @Superfalconshow shared, “We caught up with a proud Nigerian from Kwara State who came to the stadium with his family to support the Super Falcons. And just to clear the air, contrary to what many believe, the woman beside him is not Super Falcons defender Ashleigh Plumptre’s mother, but his wife.”

Amid the online buzz, Ashleigh Plumptre herself addressed the speculation, debunking the claim in an interview shared online.

She confirmed that while the woman is not related to her, their emotional connection runs deep.

“Somebody said it, but that’s not my family. I will tell you quickly,” Plumptre said. “That family came and watched the tournament in 2022, and I saw them in the crowd—the girls—and it made me emotional because they reminded me of myself and my sister, and their dad and whatever.”

She recalled first seeing the family during the 2022 WAFCON tournament and feeling a personal bond from the stands.

“So, I have actually been speaking to them because when we played a couple of games ago, I saw them again. I wanted to make sure I know them. So, I gave one of the girls my shirt, and I was like, ‘Message me on Instagram and I will try and find you,’ and I did. Then I managed to speak to them a little bit and I’m hoping tomorrow I actually see them. But they’re not my family.”

Despite the lack of biological ties, Plumptre emphasized how much the family means to her.

“They always feel like my family because, you know them, I see them sat there. The dad obviously resembles my dad. The girls always… the mum looks like my mother. But no, it’s not my family. But still, they mean a lot to me.”

Plumptre, currently playing for Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad, has been pivotal to Nigeria’s WAFCON success. Her calm leadership and crucial defensive displays earned her a spot in the Team of the Group Stage.

Beyond her on-field brilliance, her humility and heartfelt connection with fans continue to elevate her legacy.
