For the first time in over a year, tennis legend Venus Williams is set to make a long-awaited return to the WTA Tour.

The former world No. 1, who boasts seven Grand Slam titles, last appeared at the 2024 Miami Open, where she suffered a first-round exit at the hands of rising star Diana Shnaider.

That early defeat marked the beginning of a lengthy layoff, nearly 16 months, during which Williams dropped out of the WTA rankings entirely.

Now in her mid-forties, the American icon is ready to step back into the spotlight, choosing the Washington, DC, tournament as the stage for her comeback.

The joint WTA and ATP event is scheduled to run from July 21 to 27.

Speaking ahead of her return, Williams shared her affection for the host city: “There’s something truly special about D.C. The energy, the fans, the history. This city has always shown me so much love, and I can’t wait to compete there again.”

Her comeback is already generating excitement in the capital. DC Open chairman Mark Ein highlighted the impact of her return, saying, “She has inspired people around the world with her accomplishments on the court and her visionary impact off the court. I know how much it means to our DC fans and community to be able to watch her compete in person this summer.”

Williams’ return adds a historic layer to an already anticipated summer tournament, promising fans a rare chance to see one of the sport’s greats in action once again.
