Venus Williams returns to US Open as wildcard

Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, Venus Williams, is set to make a return to the US Open stage, this time in the mixed doubles category, after receiving a wild card entry to partner with fellow American Reilly Opelka.

At 45, Venus rejoined the professional tennis circuit just last week following a lengthy absence of over a year. The U.S. Tennis Association confirmed on Tuesday that the duo is among the 14 teams selected for the mixed doubles event scheduled for August 19–20.

Her inclusion on the preliminary entry list has reignited excitement among fans, who are eager to witness the iconic champion — a four-time US Open winner in both singles and doubles — grace the courts of Flushing Meadows once more.

Venus recently accepted a wildcard to compete in the WTA 500 event in Washington, marking her first official match appearance since the 2024 Miami Open. Earlier this year, she was offered a wildcard into the Indian Wells Open, but she declined the invitation shortly after it was announced.

“I’m just here for now, and who knows?” Williams told the Associated Press after winning back-to-back matches on her return. “Maybe there’s more…but at the moment, I’m focused just on this. I haven’t played in a year.

“There is no doubt I can play tennis, but obviously coming back to play matches, it takes time to get in the swing of things. I definitely feel I’ll play well. I’m still the same player – I’m a big hitter, I hit big. This is my brand.”
