Venezia stun Fiorentina 2-1, boost Serie A survival hopes

Venezia claimed a crucial 2-1 victory over Fiorentina on Monday, significantly boosting its hopes of remaining in Serie A for another season.

The win lifted Venezia out of the relegation zone and into 17th place, just above the bottom three.

With only two games left to play, Venezia now controls its own fate. It sits one point clear of both Lecce and Empoli, with upcoming fixtures away at Cagliari and a home finale against Juventus.

At the Stadio Pierluigi Penzo, Fali Cande broke the deadlock just after the hour mark, and Gaetano Oristanio doubled the lead eight minutes later to give the hosts command of the match.

Fiorentina responded through Rolando Mandragora with 13 minutes to go, but it wasn’t enough.

The defeat dealt a heavy blow to Fiorentina’s European ambitions. They remained in ninth place, still four points adrift of the qualification zone and running out of time to close the gap.
