Varsity unions threaten strike over unfair sharing' of N50bn allowance

University non-academic staff unions have threatened to embark on industrial action over what they describe as a “lopsided and unjust” allocation of the N50 billion recently approved by the Federal Government for earned allowances in universities.

According to The PUNCH, the unions — the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions — jointly rejected the proposed distribution formula, which reportedly allocates 80 per cent of the funds to the Academic Staff Union of Universities, leaving the remaining 20 per cent to SSANU, NASU, and the National Association of Academic Technologists.

SSANU President, Muhammed Ibrahim, in an interview on Friday, described the situation as “scandalous and satanic,” arguing that all university workers operate under the same harsh economic conditions and should be treated equitably.

“We have made our case known to the public. What the government intends to do is deeply unfair,” Ibrahim said. “The gap between 80 per cent for ASUU and 20 per cent for other unions who also contribute significantly to the university system is simply unacceptable.”
