Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has restated his administration’s commitment to the fight against drug abuse and the rehabilitation of those affected by substance use across the state.
Speaking in Owerri as part of activities marking the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse, the governor’s Special Adviser on Narcotics and Illicit Drugs Monitoring, Mr. Ezechukwu Obonna, noted that the state government is prioritizing the reintegration of drug users into society.
“The governor remains committed to not just combating drug abuse but also ensuring that victims of addiction are treated and re-empowered to live productive lives,” Obonna said.
According to him, the Uzodimma administration has provided tangible support to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in Imo State, including the donation of operational vehicles to enhance enforcement efforts.
“We recently donated Hilux vans to support NDLEA operations in the state,” he stated. “Additionally, the First Lady of Imo State renovated a rehabilitation centre to ensure drug users receive proper care and support.”
Obonna praised Governor Uzodimma for investing in youth-focused programmes aimed at improving livelihoods and reducing the risk of substance abuse among young people.
“Our youths are the future. The governor has shown that through targeted empowerment and welfare schemes, we can address the root causes of drug dependency,” he added.
Reaffirming the administration’s support for ongoing NDLEA activities, Obonna urged the public to join hands with the government in curbing the menace.
“This fight is not one the government can win alone. Communities must speak up, report traffickers, and support recovery efforts,” he emphasized.
He also issued a stern warning to those involved in the drug trade: “Drug trafficking and abuse have devastating consequences. I urge those engaged in it to desist immediately. We cannot allow a few to destroy the future of our youth.”
As part of his message, Obonna called for a united front against drug abuse, stressing the importance of awareness, reporting, and rehabilitation as key steps toward building a drug-free society.
