A 16-year-old student of Starville International School, Jabi, Abuja, Olamide Aderibigbe, has emerged among the top scorers in the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, achieving an impressive 336 out of 400 points overall.
Aderibigbe stood out particularly in Mathematics, where he scored 98 out of 100. His other subject scores include 86 in Physics, 84 in Economics, and 68 in English.
The Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, during the official presentation of the 2025 UTME statistics, revealed that out of more than 1.9 million candidates, only 12,414 scored 300 and above. Just 4,756 candidates managed to score 320 or higher.
By comparison, in 2024, only around 8,000 candidates exceeded the 300 mark, representing a mere 0.5 per cent of the total examinees.
This year’s results, released on Friday, showed that over 1.5 million candidates scored below 200, the average benchmark for admission consideration in many institutions. The UTME assesses candidates across four subjects, with English being compulsory. The remaining three are selected based on each student’s intended course of study.
Commenting on the national performance, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, said the outcome indicates progress in the government’s efforts to tackle exam malpractice.
Reacting to his son’s result, Olamide’s father, Niran Aderibigbe, expressed joy and gratitude. “He hopes to study architecture in Covenant University or the University of Ibadan,” he told our correspondent on Saturday.
