FC Cincinnati have reaffirmed their trust in Nigerian midfield dynamo Obinna Nwobodo by securing his future with a fresh contract extension.

The club, via Fccincinnati.com, revealed that the 28-year-old will remain with the Orange and Blue through the 2027 season, with an additional option for 2028, a move that underlines the MLS side’s intent to retain the core of its high-performing squad.

Nwobodo, who joined from Turkish outfit Goztepe SK in April 2022, has become an indispensable figure at TQL Stadium.

A consistent engine in midfield, he has made 117 appearances for the club, starting 109 and sits fourth on FC Cincinnati’s all-time list for MLS regular-season appearances with 91 matches.

Beyond statistics, Nwobodo has embodied the club’s identity with his unyielding work ethic and leadership.

Over the past three seasons, he has been pivotal in shaping the team’s midfield resilience and identity.

“Since arriving three years ago, Obi has been a fundamental part of our success,” said FC Cincinnati General Manager Chris Albright in a statement on Fccincinnati.com.

“He’s relentless in how he approaches the game, on and off the field, and he’s an exceptional teammate and leader for our group. We’re delighted to have Obi and his family stay in Cincinnati.”

Nwobodo’s professional journey began with Enugu-based Rangers International in 2015, where he was originally deployed as a defender.

He later featured for Nigeria’s Flying Eagles, showcasing his versatility on the international youth stage. Yet, it’s in Cincinnati where he’s made the most appearances of his career.

With two goals and 11 assists across all competitions, Nwobodo has shown he can deliver in clutch moments, both goals proving decisive match-winners.

His memorable strike against New York Red Bulls on July 12, 2023, came deep into stoppage time (90’+3), ranking as the third-latest game-winner in the club’s MLS history.

In the 2023 season, the Nigerian midfielder’s tenacity was unmatched, as he led all MLS players in tackles with 62, a clear testament to his influence in disrupting opposition play and launching counterattacks.

By extending Nwobodo’s stay, FC Cincinnati are building their long-term vision around a proven leader.

As he steps into the prime of his career, the club is poised to count on his relentless drive in their ongoing quest for silverware.
