A tragic incident occurred on Thursday evening near Royal Kitchen Junction, Ifite-Awka, in Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State, when a male undergraduate of Nnamdi Azikiwe University reportedly jumped from the third floor of a private lodge and died.
According to The PUNCH, eyewitnesses said the student, whose identity has been withheld pending notification of his family, allegedly consumed a substance suspected to be the illicit drug known locally as “mkpurummiri” before the incident.
“We heard a heavy thud and rushed outside, only to find the young man lying in a pool of blood,” said a resident of the lodge who witnessed the scene. “He was barely conscious when we found him, and efforts to save his life failed. He was confirmed dead at the hospital.”
According to sources at the scene, the student was a tenant in the building. When neighbors entered his room, they reportedly found his roommate in a semi-conscious state, also believed to be under the influence of drugs. The roommate has since been taken into custody for questioning once he recovers.
Confirming the incident, Chief Safety Officer of UNIZIK, Ken Chukwurah, said the university is aware of the situation and that investigations are ongoing.
“It happened in a private lodge outside the campus, so we are limited in our control over those facilities,” Chukwurah explained. “However, we are working to establish the identity of the student and the full circumstances that led to this unfortunate event.”
He emphasized the university’s commitment to student safety, noting that efforts are being made to sensitize students about the dangers of drug abuse.
Authorities are continuing their investigations while also reaching out to the deceased’s family.
