Kamaru Usman snapped his losing streak in emphatic fashion on Saturday night, securing a unanimous decision victory over American contender Joaquin Buckley.
Known as ‘The Nigerian Nightmare,’ Usman entered the octagon at UFC Atlanta carrying the weight of three consecutive losses.
But the former welterweight champion, ranked No. 5, reminded fans of his pedigree in the main event clash at the State Farm Arena.
Facing the No. 7 ranked Buckley, who had surged into title contention with a six-fight win streak, Usman delivered a composed and clinical performance over five rounds.
Usman had not fought since October 2023 and was eager to return to winning ways.
Meanwhile, Buckley had made waves last December by stopping former interim champion Colby Covington via doctor stoppage.
Notably, 15 of Buckley’s 27 career victories had come by knockout.
However, Usman halted that momentum. After five hard-fought rounds, the judges scored the bout 49-46, 49-46, and 49-46 in favour of the Nigerian veteran.
“It’s been a while,” Usman said as he struggled to control his emotions in the postfight interview. “I needed to get that monkey off my back. I know I’m still able to do this at the highest level. … I expected him to be really tough, which he was. He’s a very talented guy. I show love and respect to all of these guys because I know what it takes to work and get here.”
