UCL: Inter stun Bayern, keep treble hopes alive

Inter Milan’s dreams of a historic treble remain alive after a thrilling 2-1 victory over Bayern Munich in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal clash on Tuesday night.

Lautaro Martínez opened the scoring for the visitors midway through the first half, capitalizing moments after Bayern’s Harry Kane struck the woodwork in a rare miss that left the England captain holding his head in disbelief.

Veteran forward Thomas Müller, who recently revealed he will depart the German giants at the end of the season, seemed to salvage a 1-1 draw with a late goal just five minutes from full time.

However, Inter responded swiftly as Davide Frattesi netted a dramatic winner just three minutes later.

The hard-fought result snapped Bayern’s impressive 22-game unbeaten streak at home in European competitions and boosted Inter’s ambitions of returning to the same stadium for the Champions League final on May 31.

Before that can happen, however, Simone Inzaghi’s men must first navigate the return leg at the San Siro next Wednesday. The winner of the tie will go on to face either Barcelona or Borussia Dortmund in the semifinals.
