Global ride-hailing company, Uber, has announced its decision to end operations in Nigeria after 12 years in the country.
The company said its Nigerian operations will cease effective September 2, 2026, following a review of its business activities.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, Uber said the decision was difficult but necessary.
“We are writing to share some difficult news. After a thorough review of our business, we have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective 2 September 2026,” the company said.
Uber began operations in Nigeria in 2014, launching its services in Lagos before expanding its presence to other parts of the country.
Reflecting on its time in Nigeria, the company expressed appreciation to customers who used its platform for their daily transportation needs.
“Since we first launched in Lagos in 2014, it has been an absolute privilege to be a part of your daily life connecting you with independent transportation providers.
“Whether it was a morning commute, a ride to see loved ones, or exploring the city, thank you for trusting the platform to connect you to a driver to get you there safely.
“We know this may cause disruption to your routine, and we sincerely apologize for the inconvenience.”
Uber also said customers would continue to have access to its help centre for a limited period following the shutdown.
The company stated that the help centre would remain available until September 23 to assist customers with outstanding account-related enquiries.
“Thank you for welcoming us into your city,” Uber added.
