Trump scared me during Club World Cup title celebration – Cucurella

Marc Cucurella has revealed he was “scared sh*tless” by the unexpected presence of United States President, Donald Trump, during Chelsea’s dramatic Club World Cup celebrations.

The Blues lifted the prestigious trophy in the United States after a stunning 3-0 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the final held at MetLife Stadium, New Jersey, a memorable night that ended with a surprising twist.

Trump, who had been invited by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, took centre stage at the post-match ceremony, smiling as he handed the trophy over to Chelsea skipper Reece James.

But instead of stepping aside after the handover, the former president remained in place and bizarrely became part of the jubilant celebrations.

The unusual moment left Chelsea players visibly confused, with Cole Palmer among those admitting he was thrown off by Trump’s antics.

Spain international Cucurella echoed those sentiments in an interview with Jijantes FC, saying, “We had been told that, as a rule, Donald Trump would come to present us with the trophy and that we couldn’t lift it until he left.

“And of course, we were all there waiting for him to leave, but the guy didn’t want to leave, and on top of that, we looked at him and he said, ‘Lift it up, I’ll stay here’, and so on. And I wondered who would say anything to him, you know… I was scared shitless.”

Chelsea’s triumph capped off a strong 2024–25 campaign that also saw them win the UEFA Conference League and finish in the Premier League’s top four.

With silverware in the bag, the squad will now shift focus to a couple of pre-season friendlies before launching their new domestic campaign at Stamford Bridge against Crystal Palace on August 17.
