A fatal accident occurred on Sunday morning, June 22, 2025, along Old Ipaja Road near Agbotikuyo, Lagos State, claiming the life of a commercial minibus driver.

The incident, which involved a 40-foot container truck, was attributed to brake failure, according to officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority.

Confirming the accident in an official statement, LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, described the crash as a “harrowing road traffic incident.”

“The catastrophic collision involved a fully-loaded 40-foot Mack container truck with registration number MUS 729 XY.

Due to suspected brake failure, the truck toppled and landed on a minibus — popularly known as ‘Korope’ — resulting in the instant death of the driver,” Adebayo said.

Despite the tragic loss of the minibus operator, three other passengers — two women and one man — were rescued unhurt by LASTMA officials who arrived promptly at the scene.

“In a swift and coordinated response, LASTMA personnel stationed along the route moved quickly to rescue the victims from the wreckage. They were immediately handed over to medical responders for proper evaluation and care,” the statement noted.

The crash caused significant traffic disruption, as the overturned truck blocked more than half of the road.

LASTMA deployed traffic diversion measures across affected routes including Shofunde and Olufunlayo to manage the gridlock.

Adebayo also disclosed that the truck driver attempted to flee the scene but was intercepted by alert traffic officers.

“The driver tried to escape, but our men apprehended him and handed him over to security operatives from Elere and Area G Police Divisions, who were contacted promptly,” he said.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Lagos State Ambulance Services, and the Nigeria Police collaborated with LASTMA to secure the scene and clear the roadway.

Special Adviser to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu on Transportation, Hon. Sola Giwa, extended his condolences to the family of the deceased.

He stressed the urgent need for truck operators to adhere to safety guidelines and maintain their vehicles regularly.

“This tragic loss is a painful reminder of the dangers posed by mechanical negligence,” Giwa said.

“We call on all operators of articulated vehicles to ensure that their braking systems and other critical components are thoroughly checked before hitting the roads. Compliance with safety standards is not optional — it is mandatory.”

He assured the public that the state government remains firm in its commitment to enforcing road safety, improving emergency response times, and ensuring that all vehicles on Lagos roads are roadworthy.
