President Bola Tinubu has called on young Nigerians to use social media as a tool to promote unity, drive innovation, and solve societal problems rather than spread division and misinformation.
He made the call during the opening ceremony of the two-day Progressive Digital Media Summit held at the State House Banquet Hall, Abuja.
The summit, themed “Unveiling the Critical Role of New Media in National Development,” brought together key stakeholders to discuss the transformative power of digital platforms.
Tinubu acknowledged the creativity and resourcefulness of Nigerian youths, noting that their active involvement in digital innovation is already shaping the nation’s future.
“Across Nigeria, we are witnessing a surge of creativity and ambition, especially among our youth,” the President said. “You are not waiting to be invited into the future—you are actively building it.”
He stressed that social media is now a major force in national development, providing platforms for job creation, civic engagement, and innovation. However, he cautioned against its misuse.
“As your influence grows, so must our shared sense of purpose and responsibility,” Tinubu said. “Use these platforms for the greater good. Create content that uplifts. Build businesses that empower others. Promote unity, not division.”
The President also expressed concern over the spread of misinformation, urging content creators to pause and verify information before amplifying it online.
“Disinformation travels fast. Before you share anything, pause. Let our digital space reflect the values of compassion, discipline, and patriotism,” he said.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to digital growth, Tinubu highlighted government investments in broadband expansion and innovation through programs like the National Digital Innovation Forum.
“Internet access must no longer be a luxury. It is a right. We are building infrastructure and creating policies that support startups and innovation,” he added.
The President also emphasized the importance of cybersecurity and protecting citizens in the digital space, describing Nigerian youths as the nation’s “greatest asset.”
“Let your leadership be rooted in integrity. Let your digital footprint reflect the best of Nigeria. Use your voice not just for expression or outrage, but for building real solutions,” he advised.
He concluded by urging young Nigerians to champion digital literacy, mentor others, and commit to actions that reflect a deep sense of national pride and responsibility.
