Tinubu to swear in Disu as IGP Wednesday

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to formally swear in Olatunji Disu as the substantive Inspector-General of Police on Wednesday, following the Nigeria Police Council’s unanimous endorsement of his appointment.

According to The PUNCH, the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed in a statement on Monday that the ceremony would take place during the Federal Executive Council meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

“The swearing-in ceremony will be held during the Federal Executive Council meeting on Wednesday,” Onanuga stated, noting that the Police Council ratified the President’s decision at a meeting earlier in the day.

The meeting, presided over by Tinubu at the State House, was attended by Vice President Kashim Shettima, several state governors, and the Chairman of the Police Service Commission, retired Deputy Inspector-General Hashimu Argungu, in line with constitutional provisions.

Also present were the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Minister of Police Affairs, Ibrahim Gaidam; Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike; and Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Esther Walson-Jack.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu reportedly praised Disu’s track record, particularly his time as Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos between 2015 and 2021.

“His performance in Lagos, especially in crime control and rapid response operations, speaks volumes about his competence,” Sanwo-Olu was quoted as saying.

Nasarawa State Governor Abdullahi Sule also commended the President’s choice, describing Disu as a seasoned officer whose elevation reflects merit and professional excellence.

FCT Minister Nyesom Wike highlighted Disu’s previous service in Rivers State and Abuja, recalling his role as Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of the Criminal Investigation Department and anti-kidnapping operations in Rivers between 2014 and 2015.

“He demonstrated professionalism and firmness in tackling criminal activities. As Commissioner of Police in the FCT, he ensured the command had strategic impact in addressing security challenges,” Wike said.

Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah seconded the motion endorsing Disu’s appointment during the council meeting.

Disu’s confirmation follows his recent appointment as Acting Inspector-General after the resignation of Kayode Egbetokun last week.

Born on April 13, 1966, in Lagos State, Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force on May 18, 1992, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police.

Over the years, he has earned qualifications in public administration, criminology, forensic investigation, security studies, legal psychology, and entrepreneurship.

Before his latest appointment, he served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police, overseeing the Special Protection Unit and the Force Criminal Investigation Department Annex in Lagos.

Disu previously worked closely with Tinubu during his tenure as Lagos State Governor between 1999 and 2007, serving as Aide-de-Camp, while his predecessor, Egbetokun, was Chief Security Officer at the time.

With his formal swearing-in expected on Wednesday, Disu will assume full responsibility as the nation’s top police officer.
