President Bola Tinubu will today host Nigeria’s women’s national basketball team, D’Tigress, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The team recently clinched victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Championship in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
State House officials confirmed that the African champions, who defeated Mali 78–64 in a thrilling final on Sunday, will be honored by the President in recognition of their outstanding performance and contribution to national pride.
This victory marks a historic milestone for the team, securing their fifth consecutive AfroBasket title and seventh overall, making them the most successful team in the tournament’s history.
With this win, D’Tigress extended their unbeaten streak in the competition to 10 straight years, further cementing their dominance on the continent. Under the leadership of head coach Rena Wakama, the Nigerian side overcame a slow start in the final to take full control in the second half, executing a disciplined game plan that left Mali struggling to keep up.
The team’s journey to the final was equally impressive, including a hard-fought semi-final victory against Senegal.
This reception follows President Tinubu’s recent hosting of the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s women’s football team, after their Women’s Africa Cup of Nations triumph in Morocco. The Falcons were rewarded with $100,000 each, $50,000 for technical crew members, national honors of Officers of the Order of the Niger, and three-bedroom apartments under the Renewed Hope Housing Scheme.
The D’Tigress’ latest achievement continues to elevate Nigeria’s reputation in continental and global sports, showcasing the country’s growing prowess in women’s basketball.
