President Bola Tinubu has formally requested the Senate to confirm the appointment of Prof. Yusuf Mohammed Yusuf as a Commissioner of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission.
The President’s request was conveyed in a letter addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio and read during Wednesday’s plenary session. In the letter, Tinubu stated that the nomination was made in compliance with Section 21 of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission Act, 2022.
“Whilst I hope that the Senate will consider and confirm the nomination of Professor Yusuf Mohammed Yusuf in an expeditious manner, please accept, Distinguished Senate President and Senators, the assurances of my highest consideration,” the President wrote.
Following the reading of the letter, Senate President Akpabio referred the nomination to the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters for further legislative action. The committee is expected to thoroughly scrutinize Yusuf’s credentials and submit its recommendations to the full Senate in due course.
Prof. Yusuf’s nomination comes as a replacement for Prof. Fatima Alkali, who was initially nominated on June 2, 2025, but failed to appear before the Senate for the mandatory screening and confirmation process.
The Nigerian Law Reform Commission is tasked with reviewing the nation’s laws and recommending necessary reforms to ensure they remain relevant and effective in addressing contemporary challenges.
