President Bola Tinubu has announced a generous reward package for Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their recent victory at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket tournament in Côte d’Ivoire.
Each player will receive $100,000, while every member of the 11-man coaching and technical crew will be given $50,000.
In addition, all team members and officials have been awarded a three-bedroom apartment at the Renewed Hope Estate.
The President also conferred the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger on the players and their coaches in recognition of their historic achievement.
Vice President Kashim Shettima made the announcement on Sunday at a presidential reception held in their honour at the State House Banquet Hall, Abuja.
“We are proud of what you’ve accomplished. Mr. President has directed that each player receive $100,000 and a three-bedroom flat, while your coaches will each get $50,000. You’ve done the country proud, and this is a small token of appreciation,” Shettima said.
The reception was graced by several dignitaries, including First Lady Oluremi Tinubu and the wife of the Vice President, Nana Shettima. Also present were the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Chairman, Senate Committee on Youths and Sports Development, Garba Maidoki; and Chairman, House Committee on Sports, Kabiru Amadou.
D’Tigress secured their fifth consecutive AfroBasket championship after defeating Mali 78–64 in the final held at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan on Saturday, August 3, 2024. The victory also marked their seventh overall title, further solidifying their dominance in African women’s basketball.
The celebration mirrored a similar event held the previous week for the Super Falcons, Nigeria’s women’s football team, after clinching their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title.
President Tinubu’s administration has pledged continued support for sports development and female athletes, with many praising the gesture as a morale booster ahead of future international competitions.
