Former Ogun State Governor Senator Gbenga Daniel has expressed strong confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s ability to successfully restructure Nigeria and establish true federalism.
The endorsement came during the 99th Birthday Lecture honoring Afenifere leader Pa Reuben Fasoranti at the Federal University of Technology, Akure.
Daniel specifically praised Tinubu’s recent establishment of Regional Development Commissions, describing them as strategic moves toward restructuring. “These commissions will drive tailored development across regions and address long-standing demands for power devolution, particularly in southern states,” he stated during his lecture titled “A Strong United Yoruba Race as Panacea for Reviving Vanishing Yoruba Values and Culture.”
While acknowledging that restructuring faces resistance, Daniel remained optimistic: “Restructuring Nigeria in a way that earns the buy-in of all may not be as fast as some desire, but the benefits will come, fostering unity and cohesion.” He urged Afenifere to collaborate with other groups to achieve this political reality.
Former Ondo Governor Dr. Olusegun Mimiko strongly supported the restructuring call, describing federalism as beneficial for all regions. “God has endowed every region with resources. With restructuring, competition among sub-nationals will lead to rapid development,” Mimiko noted. He however raised alarm about Southwest security challenges: “Our physical environment is under assault — kidnappings, land grabs, killings — these must be addressed urgently.”
Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa honored Fasoranti as “a rare symbol of patriotism, courage and integrity,” adding: “What we are celebrating here today is not just the number…but the life in the years and journey of an elder statesman.” He emphasized the lecture’s theme on preserving Yoruba identity, stating: “We must recognize the significance of our traditions, customs and values in shaping our identity.”
Other dignitaries including UI Alumni Chairman Yinka Akinola and Olowo of Owo Oba Ajibade Ogunoye praised Fasoranti’s legacy. The Olowo recalled Fasoranti’s service as Finance Commissioner under late Governor Ajasin, urging emulation of his cultural preservation efforts.
