President Bola Tinubu has extended warm congratulations to Nigeria’s women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, following their hard-fought victory over Senegal in the semi-final of the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket.
The message, released through Presidential Spokesperson Mr. Bayo Onanuga on Sunday in Abuja, celebrates the team’s qualification for the final of the continental championship for a record fifth consecutive time.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, D’Tigress secured a 75-68 win against Senegal on Saturday night at the Palais des Sports de Treichville in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.
The victory also guaranteed Nigeria’s place in the 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup qualifying tournaments.
Tinubu commended the reigning African champions for their unwavering resilience, dominance, and consistent performance, particularly against their long-time West African rivals, Senegal.
The win marks D’Tigress’ seventh straight triumph over Senegal and was widely celebrated as a landmark achievement in Nigerian basketball history.
Describing the semi-final as “the final before the final,” the President praised the team’s relentless spirit and competitive edge.
“I have observed the discipline, focus, and team spirit consistently displayed by D’Tigress throughout this tournament,”
“These are qualities that have brought honour to our nation and earned respect for our players and coaches worldwide.”
Tinubu also reserved special praise for Rena Wakama, the team’s pioneering head coach and former player, who became the first woman to lead the team.
“I especially commend Rena Wakama, the team’s first female Head Coach, whose leadership and experience, both on the court and now from the bench, continue to inspire D’Tigress to new heights in this highly competitive sport,” he said.
The President reaffirmed his unwavering support for the team as they aim to secure a record-extending fifth consecutive AfroBasket crown and their seventh overall when they face Mali in Sunday’s final.
