The 9th National Youth Games kicked off on Friday, August 29, 2025, at the Stephen Keshi International Stadium in Asaba, where President Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu formally declared the competition open.

Represented at the ceremony by his Special Adviser on Media and Public Communications, and former Minister of Sports, Mr. Sunday Dare, the President described the Games as a “veritable platform for discovering and nurturing talents” that have, over the years, gone on to fly Nigeria’s flag at continental and global championships.

Reiterating his government’s commitment to the advancement of sports, Tinubu emphasized that sport remains a “unifying force” for Nigeria.

“Very recently, we witnessed the President, alongside the First Lady, cheering the Super Falcons and the D’Tigress. That show of support underscores the administration’s firm commitment to continue investing in sports and strengthening development across the country,” Dare noted.

The President commended the leadership of the National Sports Commission under Mallam Shehu Dikko and Hon. Bukola Olopade, for their continued drive in promoting grassroots and youth sports.

He equally lauded the Delta State Government for once again playing host, remarking that “Asaba has gradually become the headquarters of sports competitions in Nigeria.”

“May the best teams, the best states, and the best athletes shine and win,” he prayed while formally opening the Games.

Delta Governor Stresses Grassroots Commitment

Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, represented by the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor, described the Games as “a celebration of Nigeria’s youth, unity, and future.”

He highlighted Delta’s pedigree in producing sports icons such as Stephen Keshi, Austin “Jay-Jay” Okocha, Blessing Okagbare, and Ese Brume, noting that the state continues to invest heavily in sports infrastructure and youth development.

“Hosting this Games for the third time in a row is proof of our commitment to grassroots sports. We believe in catching them young, giving our youth the platform to excel and bring glory to Nigeria,” the governor stated.

Organisers Promise Memorable Experience

Chairman of the Main Organising Committee and Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, emphasized that the Youth Games are crucial to building “a strong pathway that links grassroots talent to elite performance and podium success.”

Also, the Chairman of the Local Organising Committee and Delta State Sports Commission, Mr. Onoriode Oborevwori, assured all participants of a world-class experience.

“From upgraded facilities to efficient logistics and a welcoming environment, Asaba is set to offer not just a sporting event, but a memorable experience,” he assured.
