Nigeria’s triumphant Super Falcons were received by President Bola Tinubu and First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu at the State House on Monday, following their spectacular 3-2 comeback victory against Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses in Saturday’s WAFCON final.
The senior women’s national team, which arrived at the Presidential Villa at exactly 4:36pm, proceeded directly to the President’s office where they were celebrated for their record-extending tenth Women’s Africa Cup of Nations title.
There after, President Tinubu conferred on each of the Super Falcons the national honour of the Officer of the Order of the Niger.
The OON is the second-highest national award within the Order of the Niger, which is the second-highest national order of merit in Nigeria. The Order of the Niger is junior to the Order of the Federal Republic.
The president also allocated three-bedroom apartment to the Super Falcons and gifted them the naira-equivalent of $100k,000.
President Tinubu had personally charged the Falcons before the final match, urging the most successful team in WAFCON history – having now won 10 of 12 tournaments – to bring the trophy home.
The team delivered on this mandate with a thrilling performance against the host nation, overcoming a deficit to secure Nigeria’s continental dominance.
