President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, on the occasion of his 99th birthday.

In a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu described Fasoranti as a symbol of integrity, public service, and Yoruba nationalism.

“Today, I rejoice with the family, political associates, and friends of our dear father, leader and patriarch, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, as we celebrate his remarkable journey of 99 years on earth,” the President said.

Reflecting on the Afenifere leader’s contributions to national development, Tinubu highlighted his enduring commitment to education, progressive politics, and good governance.

“Baba’s career as a teacher, principal, and educationist reflects his commitment to public service and community development. After retirement, he founded Omolere Nursery School and Akure High School, institutions that still stand as monuments to his legacy,” Tinubu noted.

He also praised Fasoranti’s political activism, particularly his unwavering loyalty to the ideals of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

“As a committed political activist, he joined Chief Awolowo’s Action Group and later played a vital role in the Unity Party of Nigeria. He was a trusted ally of the sage throughout his life,” Tinubu added.

The President recalled Fasoranti’s tenure as Ondo State Commissioner for Finance under Governor Michael Adekunle Ajasin, commending him for his prudent fiscal management which enabled the success of the UPN’s landmark programmes such as free education and healthcare.

Tinubu also lauded Fasoranti’s courage during Nigeria’s military era, saying, “In the darkest hours of our nation under General Sani Abacha’s dictatorship, Baba and his Afenifere and NADECO colleagues stood firm. Their resilience inspired our generation.”

The President expressed deep personal gratitude to Fasoranti for his support during his presidential campaign.

“When I decided to run for the presidency, I visited Baba at his residence in Akure. I remain deeply grateful for his blessings and belief in my vision for Nigeria,” he said.

“As we celebrate Baba at 99, may we be inspired by his life of service and find the courage to act in the nation’s best interest. May our communities never lack wise elders like him,” Tinubu concluded.

Pa Reuben Fasoranti, a respected leader in Nigeria’s southwest region, remains a powerful voice in national discourse and a guiding figure for younger generations of political leaders.
