Super Falcons retain 36th position in FIFA global ranking

Nigeria’s Super Falcons have held firm in the latest FIFA women’s world rankings, retaining their 36th place globally.

The rankings, released on Thursday via the official website of the Federation of International Football Association, confirmed that Nigeria also continues to reign supreme in Africa.

Despite remaining stationary on the global chart, the Falcons maintain their status as the top-ranked team on the continent.

At the summit, the United States still lead the pack, though their dominance is increasingly under threat.

“Indeed, the gap at the top has narrowed, with Spain (2nd) and Germany (3rd) heaping the pressure on the Americans”, the FIFA report noted.

“The two European heavyweights have remained unbeaten since the last update, while the US suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Brazil in April, a result that propelled Brazil four places up to 4th. “…the star-studded squad coached by Emma Hayes can see the European pair looming ever larger in their rear-view mirror,” the report added.

England, meanwhile, dropped a spot to 5th, sitting just ahead of Sweden, now in 6th. Further down the table, Japan and Canada also saw their rankings affected by recent losses to South American sides.

The next release of the FIFA Women’s World Rankings is scheduled for August 7, 2025.

In the build-up to this year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, the Super Falcons recently boosted their preparations with a 2-0 victory over Cameroon in an international friendly played last Tuesday in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

A first-half double from Rasheedat Ajibade secured the win for Justin Madugu’s team.

Looking ahead, the Nigerian women will lock horns with Portugal in another friendly match set for Monday, June 23, as part of their WAFCON warm-up.

At the continental tournament, Nigeria has been drawn in a group featuring Tunisia, Algeria, and Botswana.
