Super Eagles midfielder, Alex Iwobi, has reaffirmed his dedication to representing Nigeria at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, choosing national duty over club responsibilities with Fulham.

AFCON 2025 Heads to Morocco

The 35th edition of AFCON will take place in Morocco, with the tournament scheduled from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026.

Traditionally held in February, this edition was moved to a December start due to calendar congestion in the upcoming season.

Country Comes First

As debates over club-versus-country obligations resurface, Iwobi made his stance clear in a conversation with The Guardian.

The Nigerian international stated his preference to play for the Super Eagles even if it clashes with Fulham’s fixtures.

“It’s not nice for us [to have to choose between the AFCON and our clubs], but with all due respect to Fulham I would like to go to the AFCON,” Iwobi told The Guardian.

Inspired by Ian Wright

Iwobi also reflected on the influence of former Arsenal legend Ian Wright, revealing that the English forward remains a key figure in shaping his football philosophy and personal lifestyle.

“Looking at them, especially Ian Wright, he literally did whatever he wanted,” Iwobi says. “He expressed himself, gave 100% in football, but also enjoyed his life.

“So I would also use him as a role model that I still give 100% in my football. But I like to have fun on the pitch as well as off the pitch, so that’s my way with music, with fashion, with charity stuff.

“There’s a lot of things I do just to … I wouldn’t say get distracted, but just, like, have a moment or just to breathe.”

Iwobi’s words reaffirm his unwavering passion for Nigeria and his belief in a balanced life both on and off the field. As the countdown to AFCON 2025 begins, fans will be encouraged by his commitment to don the green and white jersey once more.
