Nigeria’s Super Eagles claimed a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Rwanda in their 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign, marking only their second win in the series.

The match, part of matchday seven, was hosted at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, where home fans witnessed a tense but ultimately decisive performance from the Nigerian side.

The game remained deadlocked in the first half as both sides struggled to create clear-cut chances.

However, Nigeria’s attacking rhythm was disrupted early when star striker Victor Osimhen, the team’s top scorer in the qualifiers, was forced off the field due to an injury.

His early exit raised concerns over the team’s attacking potency for the remainder of the campaign.

Cyriel Dessers was brought on to replace Osimhen and immediately injected fresh energy into Nigeria’s forward line.

The Belgian-born striker combined well with his teammates, using his physical presence and movement to trouble the Rwandan defense.

His introduction allowed Nigeria to regain control of the game and dominate possession in key areas of the pitch.

The breakthrough came in the 51st minute when Tolu Arokodare capitalized on a well-worked build-up play.

The striker, finding space in the penalty area, finished clinically past the Rwandan goalkeeper, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.

From that point on, Nigeria managed the game effectively, fending off Rwanda’s attempts to equalize while maintaining a disciplined defensive shape.

Coach Eric Chelle expressed cautious optimism after the match, praising the team’s resilience despite the setback of Osimhen’s injury.

The victory provides a crucial boost to Nigeria’s qualifying hopes, keeping them in contention for the next stage of the competition.

Attention now turns to their upcoming fixtures, where maintaining momentum and managing player fitness will be key factors in their campaign.
