Super Eagles forward, Taiwo Awoniyi, is currently in an induced coma following an emergency operation, according to a report by the Daily Mail.
The Nottingham Forest striker sustained a serious injury during the final moments of their dramatic 2-2 Premier League clash against Leicester City on Sunday.
Earlier on Tuesday, Nottingham Forest issued an update confirming that the Nigerian international was “recovering well so far following urgent surgery on a serious abdominal injury.”
However, new developments suggest the situation was more severe than initially believed.
Reports now indicated that the injury was potentially life-threatening and required a “complex” medical procedure to save him.
The incident occurred when Awoniyi crashed into the goalpost while attempting to score.
Despite his determination to continue playing, he was eventually substituted a few minutes later due to the severity of the injury.
Forest had to play with 10 men for the remainder of the match, a disadvantage that reportedly led to a heated exchange between the club’s owner, Evangelos Marinakis, and head coach Nuno Espírito Santo, as the team pushed for a crucial goal in their quest for Champions League qualification.
