Human rights activist and former African Action Congress presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has been released from police custody after spending two days at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Sowore was arrested on Wednesday when he honoured an invitation from the Inspector-General of Police’s Monitoring Unit.

Confirming his release in a Facebook post on Friday, he described his detention as “illegal and unjust.”

“The Nigeria Police Force has capitulated to the demands of the revolutionary movement. I have been released from unjust, illegal and unwarranted detention. However, it is nothing to celebrate, but thank you for not giving up!” Sowore wrote.

His freedom came hours after his supporters staged protests in at least five states, calling for his immediate release.

While the police have yet to issue a detailed statement on the reason for his arrest, earlier comments from senior officers suggested it was linked to ongoing investigations.
