A newly recruited soldier, Dauda Dedan, has been accused of stabbing Police Constable Aaron John of the Taraba State Command to death in Jalingo.
The incident was confirmed by the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, James Lashen, during an interaction with newsmen in Jalingo on Wednesday.
Lashen disclosed that the tragic event occurred at 9:00 p.m. on Monday in Mayo-Goyi, a suburb of Jalingo town. According to him, Constable John had responded to a distress call from residents about a misunderstanding involving the soldier but was caught in the ensuing chaos, leading to his fatal stabbing.
The PPRO revealed that the suspect soldier is currently at large but noted that the Nigerian Army has launched an investigation into the matter. He assured that the military authorities have pledged to track down the fugitive and ensure he faces the full consequences of his actions.
“We have reported the matter to the 6 Brigade headquarters of the Nigerian Army, and we have been given full assurances of tracking down the fugitive soldier to face the full wrath of the law. Both the army and the police are working hand in hand. We have gotten to the house of the soldier, we would ensure he is arrested and is brought to book accordingly,” Lashen stated.
He further emphasized that the relationship between the police and the army remains strong despite the unfortunate incident. Investigations are ongoing to apprehend the suspect and bring justice to the deceased officer.
