A tragic road accident on Mbiabong Road, near the Itu-Calabar expressway in Akwa Ibom State, has claimed the lives of six individuals, including two children.

The incident occurred around 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.

According to the Federal Road Safety Corps, the crash involved a commercial tricycle with registration number DUU407WZ and a DYNA truck, which had no visible license plate. Eyewitnesses said the accident was caused by speeding and brake failure on the part of the truck, whose driver fled the scene immediately after the incident.

Confirming the development, the Akwa Ibom State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Assistant Corps Marshal Edward Odiete, described the incident as “avoidable” and blamed it on reckless driving.

“This heartbreaking crash could have been prevented if the drivers had adhered to basic safety protocols. Unfortunately, six lives have been lost—three adult males, one woman, and two children,” Odiete said in a statement.

He added that FRSC personnel responded swiftly to the distress call, ensuring that the deceased were moved to the morgue and that the road was cleared for normal vehicular movement.

“Our officers mobilised promptly, evacuated the victims, and removed wreckage to ease the flow of traffic,” he said.

Odiete further appealed to all motorists to obey traffic regulations and maintain their vehicles properly to prevent such incidents. “We continue to urge all road users to be safety-conscious and avoid overspeeding. Road safety is a shared responsibility,” he cautioned.

The tragic crash has left several others critically injured and receiving treatment in nearby medical facilities. Local authorities are currently investigating the incident, while the search is on for the fleeing truck driver.

The FRSC extended its condolences to the families of the deceased, promising to intensify efforts to promote road safety awareness across the state.
