Super Falcons striker, Asisat Oshoala, has firmly shut down speculation suggesting she has stepped away from international duty.
The 30-year-old Barcelona Femeni forward addressed reporters in Morocco after Nigeria’s sensational 3-2 comeback victory over hosts Morocco in the final of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Responding to the viral rumours, the six-time CAF African Women’s Player of the Year made her stance clear.
“I don’t know where that came from but agenda must agend. I get it, but I’m not bothered. I’m still here. I’m still playing. I’m still doing my job. That’s what I’m focused on,” Oshoala said.
Beyond clarifying her international status, the Bay FC forward took the opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s thrilling triumph, their record-extending 10th WAFCON title and offered an inspiring message to fans and young talents.
“I just think from today’s (Saturday) game, what I would say is don’t give up, keep fighting until the end,” she urged.
“There’s always a light at the end of the tunnel. If you believe, only if you believe.
“To be honest with you, I’m always ready. I always tell my girls like, stay ready anytime you can get called on, upon.
“And when you get called on, go out there and show yourselves.”
Although she played more of a supporting role in the tournament, Oshoala remained a vital part of Nigeria’s title-winning squad, having been named in the final 23-player list.
Her journey with the national team began in 2013, when she made her senior debut under interim coach Edwin Okon during a friendly against Japan.
Her breakout came the following year, dominating the 2014 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup and leading Nigeria to glory at the African Women’s Championship.
Oshoala holds the remarkable achievement of being the first African to score in three consecutive FIFA Women’s World Cups.
Now with four WAFCON titles under her belt, 2014, 2016, 2018, and 2024, she remains an enduring force in Nigerian football history.
