Multiple people have been hospitalized following the collapse of a building in the early hours of Thursday along Adeniji Adele Road, in the Isale Eko area of Lagos Island.
Emergency responders from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the Nigerian Police Force, and other relevant agencies were swiftly mobilized to the scene for rescue operations.
In an update shared via its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, LASTMA confirmed that victims trapped under the debris were successfully rescued and rushed to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care.
“There is a report of an overnight collapsed building along Adeniji Adele Road at Isale Eko.
LASTMA personnel, other emergency responders, and men of the Nigerian Police Force are all on ground. Traffic flow is currently not affected along the corridor as our personnel are firmly at the location for traffic monitoring.
Victims rescued from the building have been taken to the hospital for treatment,” the agency stated.
While the number of casualties has yet to be officially confirmed, rescue efforts are ongoing as officials continue to comb through the rubble.
To minimize disruption in the area, LASTMA also announced traffic diversions. “Our officials have diverted traffic from Zenith back through Oba’s Palace to make use of Enu Owa to their various destinations,” the agency added.
Residents in the area say the collapsed structure was old and had visible signs of deterioration. “We’ve been worried about that building for a while. It’s unfortunate that nothing was done before it gave way,” a local shop owner who witnessed the rescue efforts told reporters.
Although the exact cause of the collapse has not been disclosed, experts have frequently raised concerns about aging infrastructure and poorly maintained buildings in parts of Lagos Island.
