Senate confirms Aminu Yusuf as population commission chair

The Senate has approved the appointment of Aminu Yusuf from Niger State as the Chairman of the National Population Commission.

Also confirmed as commissioners of the NPC are Joseph Haruna Kigbu from Nasarawa State and Tonga Betara Bularafa from Yobe State.

Their confirmation on Tuesday followed the presentation and adoption of the report by the Senate Committee on National Identity and National Population, chaired by Senator Victor Umeh (LP–Anambra Central).

Presenting the report, Senator Umeh said the nominees were properly screened by the committee on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.

“The nominees appeared before the committee for screening on Tuesday, the 14th of October, 2025,” he said.

“The committee did not receive any criminal complaints on any of the nominees. They are prepared for the job for which they have been nominated.”

According to Umeh, the committee verified key documents such as curriculum vitae, Code of Conduct Bureau clearance, police reports, and DSS background checks before the screening exercise.

He added that each nominee made a formal presentation and participated in a question-and-answer session, after which the committee was satisfied with their competence and eligibility.

Following the presentation, the Senate dissolved into the Committee of the Whole to consider the report.

When Senate President Godswill Akpabio put the confirmation to a voice vote, the “ayes” prevailed.

It will be recalled that President Bola Tinubu had earlier written to the Senate, seeking the screening and confirmation of the nominees.

The letter, dated July 31, 2025, was read during plenary on October 7 by Senate President Akpabio.
