Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering dedication to the welfare of civil servants, declaring that payment of salaries is a basic right, not a favour.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress Kogi State chapter, at the Lugard House in Lokoja on Saturday, the governor emphasized that his government would continue to uphold the dignity of labour.

“Your salary is your right and not a privilege,” Governor Ododo stated, according to a release by his Special Adviser on Media, Ismail Isah.

“We are here to serve, and my administration will continue to ensure that workers receive what is duly theirs. We value the contribution of civil servants and recognise that a thriving public service is key to the state’s progress.”

He also stressed the importance of collaboration with organised labour to achieve the state’s development agenda.

“We appreciate the cooperation of the labour unions, and we see you as partners in our vision to build a more efficient and motivated workforce.”

In his remarks, the State Chairman of the NLC, Gabriel Amari, commended the governor for delivering on his promises to workers. He praised the administration for prompt salary payments, implementation of the minimum wage, and disbursement of leave bonuses.

“Our visit is to express our gratitude for the prioritisation of workers’ welfare. The consistent and timely payment of salaries and the extension of health insurance to pensioners are commendable,” Amari said.

Amari also acknowledged infrastructural improvements made by the Ododo-led administration at the Labour House, including the installation of a borehole, a 33KVA power line, and a new transformer—all contributing to better working conditions for union staff and activities.

Echoing similar sentiments, Mohammed Sanusi, who led the delegation from the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees applauded the state government for ensuring full implementation of the minimum wage and prompt payment of 100% salaries at the local government level.

“This is the first time we are seeing such dedication to the welfare of local government workers. It is truly unprecedented,” Sanusi noted.
