The Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Martin Amaewhule, adjourned its sitting indefinitely on Friday.
The adjournment was announced during a plenary session at the assembly quarters in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
This development came just a day after Governor Siminalayi Fubara sent another letter to the lawmakers, expressing his intent to re-present the 2025 Appropriation Bill.
In the letter, the governor proposed March 19, or any other day in the month, to present the budget, in compliance with the February 28 Supreme Court judgment.
The judgment had recognized the 27 pro-Wike lawmakers as legitimate assembly members, who had previously set a 24-hour deadline for the governor to present the budget.
However, with the indefinite adjournment of plenary, Governor Fubara’s second attempt to present the budget is now in limbo.
During his first attempt on Wednesday, the governor and his entourage, including some of his commissioners, were locked out of the assembly quarters in Port Harcourt.
The lawmakers, on the other hand, explained that they only received the letter after Wednesday’s plenary session.
They noted that the date on the letter, March 11, left them with insufficient time to acknowledge it and extend an invitation to the governor for the budget presentation.
