Frustrated by unresolved pension issues, retired police officers under the Contributory Pension Scheme have announced plans for what they call the “Mother of All Peaceful Protests” scheduled for July 21, 2025, across all 36 states.
The Kaduna State chapter of the Union of Retired Police Officers made the declaration in a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Retired Chief Superintendent of Police Mannir M. Lawal Zaria, and Vice Chairman, Retired Assistant Superintendent of Police Danlami Maigamo. The decision was reached during their monthly meeting at the Police Officers’ Mess in Kaduna.
The retirees are demanding the immediate exit of the Nigeria Police Force from the CPS, which they claim has caused severe economic hardship, financial embarrassment, and increased cases of depression and death among pensioners.
“We have no option but to embark on another peaceful protest tagged ‘Mother of All Peaceful Protests’ on July 21, 2025,” the union declared, emphasizing their commitment to lawful means. “As law-abiding citizens, we shall continue to pursue our demand for the Nigeria Police to be exited from the CPS through peaceful means until our voices are heard.”
The group recalled their previous protest between February 24 and March 3, 2025, when Kaduna and Bauchi chapters demonstrated at the National Assembly and submitted petitions to five key offices, including relevant Senate and House committee chairmen and the DSS Director.
However, the retirees expressed deep disappointment at the National Assembly’s silence, particularly regarding the outcome of the November 19, 2024 public hearing on the Police Pension Board Bill.
“The silence from the authorities is deafening, but we remain committed to lawful engagement,” the statement noted, while distancing themselves from any groups planning violent protests.
The union maintains that establishing an independent Police Pension Board remains the only solution to what they describe as systemic injustice in the current pension system, vowing to continue their peaceful agitation until their demands are met.
