Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, has reaffirmed that all members of the House of Representatives are equal, regardless of political party, socioeconomic status, or background.

Kalu emphasized that leadership positions are privileges, not indicators of superiority.

He addressed concerns of favoritism towards experienced members, stating that all lawmakers have equal opportunities to participate in debates, according to The Nation.

The Deputy Speaker assured that presiding officers serve to facilitate democratic processes, ensuring every member’s voice is heard.

The 10th House, under the leadership of Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, commits to upholding fairness, justice, and inclusivity.

This statement aims to promote unity and equal participation among lawmakers, fostering a collaborative legislative environment.

Kalu, who responded that there was “no discrimination in parliament” further clarified that the row where the member was sitting had earlier been given an opportunity to speak, stressing that other rows also needed to be accommodated.

The Deputy Speaker added that members are however recognized to make their valuable contributions to debates based on their sitting arrangement and not by their age, tribe, geopolitical zones, political or legislative experience.
